In this coldest, darkest time of year, we light a candle to warm our hearts and brighten our moods. All through last spring and summer, bees gathered the sun’s energy from flowers and turned it into honey and wax. Now, as the bees huddle in their hives to stay warm, eating their honey to survive the winter, we light the beeswax candle and thank them for their gift to us from warmer days.
“Is there a moment quite as keen
or memory as bright
as light and fire and music sweet
to warm the winter’s night?”
—Adam Victor Christianson
